Case Study
Informative and Instructional Writing
Deryn Collier Technical Communications (DCTC) collaborated with a regional healthcare facility to develop a comprehensive Orientation Manual for newly recruited physicians, locums, and medical residents. The goal of the finished document was to support the integration of new medical staff into the facility’s community and operations.
Scope of Work
The client asked DCTC to create a professionally written and formatted PDF Manual that captured the expertise of medical staff, leveraged existing data and communications systems, and collated technical information from various hospital departments. The manual was designed to be a “living document,” continuously updated and improved to meet the evolving needs of the facility.
Approach
To ensure the success of the project, DCTC facilitated a collaborative process involving the committee members and hospital leadership. This process included gathering input from physicians, specialists, and other providers through surveys and focus groups, conducting interviews with subject matter experts, and working closely with a local design team to create an engaging and informative manual.
Results
The completed Orientation Manual provides a comprehensive overview of hospital operations, including physician orders, patient transfers, specialist consults, and hospital privileges. It also includes community information such as links to local services and settlement resources, catering to the needs of relocating physicians and their families.
Three years after completion, the manual is regularly updated and actively used, and has been used as a model document for other facilities in the region.
Conclusion
Through a collaborative effort, DCTC successfully delivered a valuable resource that not only supports the integration of new medical staff but also aligns with the facility’s broader recruitment efforts. The Orientation Manual serves as a testament to DCTC’s commitment to delivering high-quality, tailored solutions for their clients.
